WCHG helps support World Book Week

The purpose of World Book Day is to promote young children to read and enjoy books.

This year, 27 colleagues from Wythenshawe Community Housing Group (WCHG) invested 70 volunteering hours, to take the opportunity to read in 8 local primary schools throughout the week to over 800 children.

WCHG colleagues were matched to local schools and had fun investing their volunteering time towards helping children with reading and literacy. Wythenshawe's Lion Mascot 'Wythenshawe Will' also made his debut appearance at a number of local schools, inspiring the children to write reviews on their favourite book characters.

Over 650 local children are now writing a book review and the winners will be given a £10 book voucher. Each school involved in the project will also receive a £100 gift voucher, to help buy books and resources.

The campaign also resulted in hundreds of children from different schools around Wythenshawe having the opportunity to dress as their favourite book characters. Children were also asked to bring a copy of the book their character was in, to review it at school.

If your school would like to be involved next year or for more information about the reading challenge, please contact our volunteering team at volunteer@wchg.org.uk
