Keeping children and young people safe this summer
With summer and the school holidays just around the corner, it’s more important than ever to help keep children safe in our neighbourhoods. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t ignore it.
You might spot signs of neglect or abuse as part of your day-to-day life. Even if you’re not completely sure, it’s always better to raise your concern early.
Worried about a child?
If you’re concerned about the safety or wellbeing of a child or young person, please contact the police in first instances (call 111 in non-emergencies and 999 in emergencies).
But if you’re unsure and feel more comfortable approaching us, you can get in touch with our Living Well Team by emailing WCHGLivingWell@wchg.org.uk. They’ll listen to your concern and make sure the right steps are taken to support those involved.
Did you know?
- 1 in 10 children in the UK have experienced neglect
- Children under 1 are the most at risk of being killed by someone they know
- Children with disabilities are three times more likely to be sexually abused
What to look out for:
- Children who are regularly dirty, hungry or wearing clothes that don’t suit the weather
- Untreated injuries or signs of illness
- Homes that feel unsafe or very unclean
- Sudden changes in behaviour – fear, tiredness, secrecy, or mood swings
- New expensive items (like phones or clothes) they can’t explain
Online abuse is also a growing risk – grooming can happen privately through messages or social media. Signs include secrecy, avoiding people, and sudden mood changes.
Even small concerns can help protect a child from harm. Trust your instincts and don’t stay silent. You could make a real difference.
