Bringing coding clubs to Wythenshawe!

What is Coder Dojo?

This global network of computer clubs is a place for young people to learn to code, develop websites, apps, games and more!

What’s happening in Wythenshawe?

CoderDojo has recently seen a club open at Woodhouse Park Lifestyle Centre, Portway, Wythenshawe. On Sunday 25th January, Wythenshawe Community Housing Group opened the first session with great success:

"We were really excited after leaving the CoderDojo and have told all our friends at school about it. I can't wait for the next one."  Athena, aged 9.

"I really liked the Minecraft and learning how to do new things" Zanthe, aged 8.

Wythenshawe CoderDojo, is part of a growing global network of programming clubs, taking young people out of their bedrooms and igniting their intelligence. The club encourages knowledge sharing, discussions, creativity and an eagerness to find out more about coding.

Tickets for the Wythenshawe CoderDojo are free and the 40 places were all snapped up for the first event within 24 hours of being released.

“This is an amazing initiative for the area. A great environment that is beneficial to young people and their parents alike. The mentors leading the sessions are incredibly excited and devoted to the cause which can only result in this club growing phenomenally” Stephanie Foster, Rullion IT Plus

Led by a group of volunteers, Wythenshawe CoderDojo is a joint initiative between Rullion IT Plus, Wythenshawe Community Housing Group and Manchester City Council. Each session offers a different learning opportunity including coding, developing websites, apps, programs, games, exploring technology and meet like-minded peers to show off the things that they create.

Why?

Sarah Klueter, Assistant Director of Community Investment and Regeneration at Wythenshawe Community Housing Group said: “There are highly paid technical jobs in Wythenshawe and the surrounding area and these are not currently going to local residents.  This club aims to help tackle that skills gap and get more residents into this well-paid growth sector.”

Thanks to CoderDojo, young people can learn important skills that will really benefit them in the future. The technology industry is strong in the North West, the UK and indeed worldwide. These skills could be key to opening the door to numerous opportunities.

And the best feature about CoderDojo is that it is absolutely free!  How many activities can you find for kids these days that are free?
