Lord Mayor visits Bideford Centre in Baguley

The Bideford Centre celebrated the start of their Christmas festivities with a visit from Councillor Susan Cooley, Lord Mayor of Manchester.

Eric Smith, local volunteer and Secretary of the Bideford Centre, welcomed the Lord Mayor to the centre to meet local residents, have a hot lunch and help draw the raffle tickets during their Christmas bingo session.

The centre is a well-used by local people, a regular hub of social events for all ages and is a great comfort to people at this time of year.

Laura Emery, Centre committee member, moved to Wythenshawe in 2010 and said; “When our family moved here we didn’t know anyone.  I got involved with the centre and everyone was so friendly and welcoming.  I love coming here and I even helped set up a self-help group here called Welcome to My World for parents of children with complex needs.  It has been a life saver!”

The Lord Mayor thanked the centre for inviting her to their festivities and said; “I have a long association with the Bideford Club and it was lovely to come back as Lord Mayor and see everyone again.  This club is run by volunteers and they are the people that hold our communities together.  I am very proud of all they achieve here and the fantastic contribution that they make.”
