Youth star aims for the big leagues

Eighteen-year-old Harvey Rogers, a familiar face at our Youth Open Access sessions at Woodhouse Park Lifestyle Centre, is about to take his basketball dream across the Atlantic.

Thanks to a £5,000 grant from the We Love MCR Rising Stars Fund, and the support of our Youth team, Harvey is heading to Toronto to train at the Global Post Graduate Prep Basketball Programme at V3 Preparatory Academy.

Harvey has been part of our youth sessions for years, standing out not just for his skill on the court but also for his leadership and encouragement of younger players. Always smiling, polite, and focused, he’s become a real role model for our community.

Last year, our Youth team backed Harvey through our youth bursary, helping with kit and equipment so he could keep pushing forward. Now, with the new grant covering his tuition and move-in costs, plus an 80% scholarship, Harvey can train, study, and compete across North America without financial stress holding him back.

Harvey is not only a passionate and talented basketball player but also a valued mentor to younger participants,” said Samantha Maunder, Neighbourhood Youth Manager. “We are incredibly proud of his achievements and are committed to supporting him every step of the way.”

For Harvey, raised by a single mum who works full-time while supporting three children, this support has been life-changing. “My goal is to earn a full university basketball scholarship and eventually play professionally, Harvey said. “This opportunity means I can focus on my development without the constant worry of financial pressure.”

Harvey’s journey shows how, when we work together, we can help young residents aim high and reach their potential. We can’t wait to see him back in Wythenshawe, sharing his new skills and inspiring the next generation.
