Rechargeable batteries are part of everyday life. They power everything from phones, laptops and vapes to e-bikes, e-scooters and mobility scooters. But batteries and charging devices need to be used and looked after safely.
A fire can start quickly, and the impact can be devastating. Taking a few simple precautions when you charge, use and store battery-powered devices can help reduce the risk of fire in your home.
Use the right charger
Always use the correct charger for your device or battery and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Stay around while it charges
Don’t leave rechargeable devices charging unattended or while you’re asleep.
Keep escape routes clear
Don’t charge or store batteries and devices where they could block your way out in an emergency. E-bikes, e-scooters and mobility scooters should not be charged or stored in hallways or communal areas where they could block an escape route.
Buy from a trusted seller
When buying e-bikes, e-scooters, mobility scooters, batteries or chargers, use trusted retailers and manufacturers. Look for a CE or UKCA mark on the product or packaging – these markings show that the manufacturer says the product meets required safety standards.
Don’t tamper with batteries
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and don’t modify batteries yourself. If you’re converting an e-bike, it’s recommended that a professional carries out the work.
Recycle batteries safely
Never put batteries in your household bin. Take them to an appropriate battery recycling point or your local tip.
We’ve invested over £975,000 in wired smoke alarms across our homes to help give you an early warning if a fire starts, but we all have a part to play.
Simple changes to how we charge, use and store batteries and rechargeable devices can help protect our homes and communities.
Watch our video below to see why fire safety matters – and remember: use the right charger, stay around while it charges and keep your escape route clear.
