Doors open for young talent

It’s not every day a young person knocks on the door asking for a job – but that’s exactly what one of our residents did. And guess what? It paid off.

This brilliant bit of initiative came from a Manchester College student studying construction, Michael Hampson, who popped into our Wythenshawe Works office to see if there were any work opportunities going. Our Employment team loved the old-school approach and got straight to work.

Thanks to our great relationship with our sub-contractor, HG Maintenance & Refurbishments Ltd., we were able to secure him employment, giving him valuable experience in the industry he’s training in.

Michael shared: “The whole situation is amazing, and I feel really positive about how it turned out. I’ve grown in character and feel like a new person. It’s my mindset, I feel more mature and that I know a lot more from working at HG Maintenance.”

Jade Walker, our Employment Coordinator, added: “Michael took initiative, showed great determination, and it paid off. Well done, Michael!”

And he’s not the only one stepping into a new role. One of our apprentices, Jack Batten has just completed his qualification, and we’ve helped him take his next steps too – securing ongoing work with HG Maintenance & Refurbishments Ltd. as well.

Jack said: “Compared to being an apprentice, it’s a bit more independent working a proper job. It’s harder, but better for growth. Doing my apprenticeship has definitely prepared me for the same standard of work and it doesn’t feel like I’m in a brand-new environment, I know what to expect.”

Adele Duncan, our Employment Coordinator, shared: “Jack’s journey shows the power of work placements! After completing his Joinery apprenticeship with us, our partnership with HG Maintenance helped him secure a job and progress his career. Huge thanks to Stephen, Salma and the team for supporting aspirations.”

These success stories are great examples of what can happen when we support local talent, nurture ambition, and work together to create real opportunities. It's not just about jobs, it’s about giving people the chance to grow, learn, and feel proud of where they live and work.

A huge thanks to HG Maintenance & Refurbishments Ltd. for backing young people in our communities and for being such a collaborative partner!

Stephen Croft, Director at HG Maintenance & Refurbishments Ltd., said: “We’re delighted to support Wythenshawe Community Housing Group and the young apprentices they champion. Their growing confidence, and commitment to developing new skills is truly inspiring. It’s a privilege to be part of Jack and Michael’s journey to see the positive impact our support is helping to make.”
