Laura’s Story: finding strength, stability and a voice with Staying Close
When 18-year-old Laura moved into her first home with us, things felt uncertain. She had struggled with binge drinking and poor mental health in the past, and was now starting out on her own. That’s when Staying Close stepped in to help her settle, feel safe and begin building a life she could be proud of.
Chantelle Lavender, our Staying Close Care Leaver Coordinator, stepped in to give practical and emotional support from day one. Together, they made her flat feel like home – decorating, finding furniture and sorting white goods.
Chantelle also helped Laura manage her money, making sure she could balance her Universal Credit with her new part-time job as a bartender.
To boost her confidence and social life, Laura joined our Youth team, started boxing, and even enrolled at Manchester College to study Health & Social Care and Music. She’s now applying for a gym bursary to keep that motivation going!
Since moving in, Laura has made amazing progress:
- She’s managing her tenancy and money independently
- Her drinking has reduced, and her mental health has improved
- She’s in a healthy relationship and surrounded by positive influences
- She’s taken her first steps back into education and is already thinking about university
Laura is also using her own experience to help shape the service for others. She’s joined our Staying Close co-production group and will be helping create leaflets and materials to support other care leavers.
Her journey shows what’s possible when we give young people the tools and confidence to take control of their future. She’s living proof that a safe home and the right support can make all the difference.
To be referred to the Staying Close service, you can speak to your social worker or personal advisor, and they can get in touch with us.
