About the opportunity

Being There are recruiting volunteers to provide support for people with cancer and other life limiting illness.

We are looking for Home-Support Volunteers to support clients in their own homes where necessary and/or accompany them to hospital appointments, social events, shopping and other agreed activities.

About Being There

Being There provides support to people with cancer and other life limiting illness, their carers and friends. Support includes respite sitting, hospital transport, social activities and practical help such as shopping.

What are we looking for?

Calm, caring and flexible individuals who are able to be supportive and discreet.
The most important qualities are reliability, flexibility where possible, a willingness to listen and an honest, non-judgemental attitude.

Ideal for:

  • Individuals looking for a long term commitment
  • Over 18 years
  • Have an interest in Social Care and Older people
  • Interest in and able to undertake Befriending, Escorting, Support work activities
  • Able to talk to others

Practical Considerations

All volunteers are legally required to undergo Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS) checks before undertaking any role with 'Being There'.

 

Volunteer Notes Moving Forward

Existing Venues

  • Good links and contacts for at least 2 effective venues in each branch.
  • I think that I need to arrange more targeting of successful events/venues

New volunteer recruitment staff member and Shakira

  • Another recruitment person would look at our diversity options. Do we need to look at disabilities and LGBT?
  • I need to work with Shakira on joint promotions.

More Health Care Events, University and Volunteer Recruitment Fairs

  • These events are more specific and can attract potential volunteers.
  • Advertising on the MACC website and other volunteer recruitment organisation websites, universities etc.
  • More joint working with other volunteer organisations

Social Media

  • I need to uses Facebook, Twitter and Instagram more effectively
  • More updates on our Website.
  • Interviews on local radio

Leaflets

  • Our leaflets are very good and are well used and received at promotion events
  • Develop a time line process chart for potential volunteers (please see attached first draft)
  • Update volunteer role description, very useful to give out at promotions.

Training events

  • Online DBS applications can be completed very quick
  • Incentives to attend training welcome pack, to keep people interested and available for the training and beyond. I.e. a pen, mug and trolley coin in a Being There bag and maybe a coffee or breakfast with the branch manager?
  • Possible incentive for potential volunteer to introduce a friend to join Being There.
  • Online training (reading our training manual and training notes) with a questions and answer section that candidates need to pass with a specific score?
  • I can keep in touch with trainees before the training sessions
  • Better admin by me, recording successes and follow up on people who don’t submit forms or don’t attend training.

 

Transport Support Volunteer-Role description

About the opportunity

'Being There' are recruiting volunteers to provide support for people with cancer and other life limiting illness.

We are looking for drivers with their own cars to help get clients to and from “Being There” ‘drop ins’, hospital/medical appointments and to wait with clients if required.
It is possible for some volunteers to combine more than one volunteering role.

Reliable and safe drivers

The most important qualities are reliability, flexibility where possible, a willingness to listen and an honest, non-judgemental attitude.

Must have

Own vehicle or access to a vehicle and a driving licence

Ideal for:

  • Individuals looking for a long term commitment
  • Over 18 years
  • Have an interest in Social Care and Older people
  • Interest in Befriending, Escorting and driving
  • Able to talk to others and listen
